Weather stops Vonn's treble bid

Lindsey Vonn's quest for a third consecutive downhill victory were put on hold yesterday as bad weather forced the World Cup race in Val d'Isere, France, to be cancelled. Originally set for 10.45am local time, the event was rescheduled twice before being called off amid strong winds, poor visibility and snowfalls.

The embattled golfer Tiger Woods received some good news on Friday when he was named the US PGA Tour Player of the Year for the 10th time. Meanwhile, the Swiss watchmakers Tag Heuer said they will "downscale the use of his image" in future advertising campaigns.

Michael Phelps and Jessica Hardy helped the US men's and women's teams set swimming short-course world records in the 4x100m medley relays at the "Duel in the Pool" on Friday. In a day that featured five world records - all by Americans - the US led the European team 89-33 in Manchester, England.
