Matar chasing two titles

The best Arabian, Asian and African footballers will be honoured at the first annual Super Awards in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night.

ABU DHABI // The best Arabian, Asian and African footballers will be honoured at the first annual Super Awards in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night. The Arabic sport magazine has polled journalists, players and fans to vote on a shortlist of 10 for each category. The UAE's Ismail Matar is one of the favourites for the Arab award after finishing runner-up in the Asian Footballer of the Year. Hosni Abd Rabo of Al Ahli and his Egyptian compatriot Amr Zaki, who has been so impressive for Wigan in the Premier League, have also been nominated, with Zaki also put forward for the African category.

Matar is also up for the Asia award, as Park Ji Sung (Man Utd and South Korea). Emannual Adebayor (Arsenal and Togo) and Michael Essien (Chelsea and Ghana) are in the running for the African prize, and will both be in attendance at the Emirates Palace hotel. The awards are sponsored by Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, while the board of trustees is chaired by Pierluigi Collina, the Italian who refereed the 2002 World Cup final.
