ABU DHABI // Al Karama and the International School of Choueifat were crowned the winners of the inaugural Majid Junior football tournament at Zayed Sports City last night.
Khalid Abdulla fired a hat-trick resulting in Karama emerging 4-0 winners over Al Mustaqbal in the Under 12 final and the International School of Choueifat edged out Al Rabeeh 1-0 in the U10 final in the six-a-side competition played over two days. In the semi-finals, Karama outclassed Manar Al Alam 4-0 and Mustaqbal overcame International Community School 1-0.
"It is a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters to play against so many schools and meet so many young footballers over the two days," said Erik Pessen, the coach of Glenelg School.
"My boys have been training for the whole year and this was a great way to end the season. This is our first participation in a tournament and such competitions will definitely encourage them to develop their skills."
Eissa al Hashimi, 11, an Emirati player from the Abu Dhabi school, added: "It was great atmosphere and excellent competition with players from so many nationalities. I really enjoyed playing and certainly look forward to playing next year."
The two-day competition drew 30 schools from all over the Emirates in both the U12 and U10 age groups.
The U12 competition consisted of 16 teams in four groups with the top two advancing to the quarter finals while the U10 event saw 12 schools in three groups with the top two and the two best third-placed teams progressing to the last eight.
