Tired Higgins manages to pot just one ball

The world champion John Higgins makes a terrible start to his bid to win the SangSom 6-red World Grand Prix in Bangkok.

BANGKOK // The world champion John Higgins made a terrible start to his bid to win the SangSom 6-red World Grand Prix yesterday. Higgins was docked three frames for arriving late at the table for his clash with Pakistan's Mohammed Sajjad. The task of winning five of the remaining six frames proved beyond Higgins, who potted just one red during his morning work out and he was beaten 5-0.

But with the top four of the six-man groups going through to the knock out stages, Higgins still cannot be ruled out of gaining a place in the last 32 knock out stages. "I just didnt wake up. Fortunately someone did call me or I might have been docked all five frames," he said. Abu Dhabi's Mohammed Shehab was eventually beaten 5-4 by fifth seed Joe Perry ,who twice trailed the 2007 Asian indoor champion.

Shehab led 2-1 and 3-2 but after forcing the decider, sat out the last and deciding frame as Perry won it 70-0. Shehab will face Irishman Joe Swail and Japan's Yutaka Fukuda today. Dubai's Mohammed al Joker lost his opening match 5-2 to Thailand's Phaitoon Phonbun. sports@thenational.ae
