David Ferrer avenged his Dubai Tennis Championship defeat to Novak Djokovic with a win for Spain in the Davis Cup.

Ferrer stuns Djokovic in the Davis Cup

BENIDORM // David Ferrer upset world number three Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-3 7-6 to give champions Spain a 1-0 lead over Serbia in their delayed Davis Cup world group first round match. Friday's two singles matches were postponed after high winds damaged the seating at the purpose-built arena around the clay court in the hills above the Mediterranean town of Benidorm. When play got under way today, Djokovic looked well short of the form that helped him beat Ferrer in the final of the Dubai championships last week, serving six double faults and committing 68 unforced errors.

The Spaniard, ranked number 12 and born just up the coast from Benidorm, took the third-set tie break 7-4 and sealed victory with a forehand winner down the line after two hours and 49 minutes. *Reuters
