Federer top seed at Wimbledon

Roger Federer, the defending champion, will be the No 1 seed for next week's Wimbledon championships despite being overtaken in the rankings by Rafael Nadal. In the women's draw there were no surprises as Serena Williams, the world No 1, was given the top seeding, with her sister Venus at No 2. Meanwhile, Samantha Stosur, the French Open finalist, and the fifth-seeded Kim Clijsters reached the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne International with contrasting displays yesterday. The third-seeded Stosur had to work hard to beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while Clijsters cruised past Lucie Safarova 6-1, 6-0.
