Robbie Keane's return to Tottenham Hotspur was the only highlight in what was a disappointing end to the January transfer window that was hampered by the adverse weather conditions in the United Kingdom.
The Premier League took action and allowed transfers to be completed after the 9pm deadline (UAE time), as long as they received emailed confirmation from both parties that deals had been agreed in principle.
Andrei Arshavin's protracted move from Zenit St Petersberg to Arsenal has taken so many twists and turns that it will probably still not be resolved by the end of the summer transfer window.
Elsewhere Chelsea left it late to bring in the Portugal winger Ricardo Quaresma on loan from Inter Milan and Calum Davenport agreed a loan deal to join Sunderland from West Ham. Both deals are until the end of the season.
