Bayern lay down a marker

Bayern Munich hammered Sporting Lisbon 7-1 on Tuesday and set a Champions League record in the process.

Bayern Munich hammered Sporting Lisbon 7-1 on Tuesday and set a Champions League record in the process. Their aggregate victory of 12-1, following a 5-0 first-leg win in Lisbon two weeks ago, beat the record 10-2 margin set by Lyon against Werder Bremen in the 2004-05 season. The Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness thinks the rest of Europe will have taken notice after such an impressive performance.

"Our results have certainly earned us a lot of respect. Other teams will certainly see videos of our games and ask themselves 'hold on a minute, what's going on there?'," said Hoeness. He added: "I certainly don't want to play against Liverpool [in the next round]. I think they are very, very strong at the moment. They have no chance of winning their league any more and that enables them to concentrate on the Champions League."
