Bahrain book place in Asian play-off
MANAMA // Bahrain defeated Uzbekistan 1-0 at the National Stadium on Wednesday to book a place in the World Cup Asian play-offs. The win ensured they finished third in Group One behind Australia and Japan, who both qualified automatically for South Africa 2010. Bahrain next play the third-placed team from Group Two, still to be determined, over two legs with the winners advancing to a home and away play-off against Oceania winners New Zealand for a place in South Africa.
Bahrain needed a draw on Wednesday to secure their spot in the play-offs but grabbed all three points when Mahmood Abdulrahman scored in the 74th minute. *Reuters
