Yousuf Al Serkal is 55 years old and the past 28 of those have been spent in sports administration. Given his experience, the president of the UAE Football Association believes he is the best man to lead Asian football forward.
"I think I am the most suitable candidate, without being unjust or unfair to the others," the Emirati said. "I think I have diverse experience. Besides I love the game and am obsessed with it. It has made me believe that this obsession can lead me to upgrade football on the continent. After all, the future is Asia, isn't it?"
Al Serkal was 27 when he became the general secretary of Al Shabab club. Five years later, he was holding the same post with the UAEFA and in 1994 he became an executive committee member at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). He has numerous administrative positions on the domestic, regional, continental and global stage.
"I think it's the right time for me to take such a role," Al Serkal said. "I have gained a lot of experience serving in AFC and I'm one of the most experienced members in AFC at the moment.
"The other candidates don't have as much experience as I do, except maybe Worawi [Makudi]. In my opinion, the right choice would be to choose between me and Worawi. Between us, the members need to decide who has the leadership qualities."
Al Serkal is running as the reform candidate. "I have been a member of AFC since the early 1990s and I'm happy and proud that, during all this time, my name has not been dragged into any sort of corruption," he said. "This is the way I am, this is how I'd like to conduct my work and I will keep fighting corruption all the way."
Al Serkal's reputation has attracted many member associations to his camp. Iran and Qatar have declared their allegiance. "I know from experience that I will win this time," he said. "If there is one thing that I am sure about, it is my victory. I've always been in contact with all members. I am aware of who is with me and who is not with me. I know whom to believe and I believe a majority of the members are supporting me."
