A suicide attacker detonated a car bomb in southern Afghanistan today, killing four civilians including two children, an official and a US army commander said. Two other children were injured in the blast in the Dand district of Kandahar province, the district governor Ahmadullah Nazick said. The car bomb was followed by a roadside bomb explosion that left a policeman injured, Mr Nazick said. The US army commander said two children were among the four people killed.
In recent months, targeted assassinations have become increasingly common in the restive Kandahar, birthplace of the Taliban movement, and in Dand district alone at least nine members of the council have been killed. * AFP
