Two reported killed as demonstrators attack Oman police station

Two demonstrators are reported to have been shot dead with rubber bullets and around five others wounded today as Omani security forces opened fire on demonstrators who tried to storm a police station, according to a news agency report quoting a security official

A police official confirmed that at least one person has been killed in clashes between security forces and hundreds of protesters demanding political reforms.

Witnesses said police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in Sohar, about 200 kilometres northwest of the capital, Muscat.

The police official says at least one person was killed in the clashes.

It is the second day of protests and suggests that a government shake-up by Oman's ruler on Saturday failed to quell the tensions.

The clashes also mark an escalation in the protests in Oman, and indicate that the unrest in the rest of the Arab world has spilled over to the country.
