Quake wounds 9 in southern Iranian port town

TEHRAN // An Iranian official says nine people were wounded after an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 hit southern Iran. The director of Hormozgan province emergency department, Yasser Hazbavi, says the quake shook the port town of Kong late yesterday evening. The quake is part of a series of tremors that has jolted the area over the past months. Kong, on the Gulf coast, has a population of 15,000 and is 1,500 kilometres south of Tehran. Iran is located on several seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes, experiencing at least one slight tremor every day on average.
