PARIS // A French official says the European Union is preparing new, expanded sanctions against Syria that would target companies.
French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero says "talks are under way" for new sanctions against "economic entities."
He spoke Friday at a news conference in Paris.
A senior EU official confirmed that such discussions are under way ahead of an EU foreign ministers meeting early next week - notably on how many businesses to target. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are private.
International powers have criticized Syria's deadly crackdown on a pro-democracy movement.
