Blast kills one in northern Gaza

GAZA CITY // One Palestinian militant was killed and two were wounded today in an explosion in the northern Gaza Strip as militants fired at least five rockets into southern Israel. Palestinian medics said the man was killed in an Israeli air strike near the northern town of Beit Lahiya, and the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad movement identified him as Sami Fatuh, one of its fighters. An Israeli military spokesman said he was not aware of any raids but that Palestinian militants had fired five rockets into Israel, all of which landed on open ground without causing any casualties or damage.

Israeli aircraft have responded to Palestinian rocket and mortar attacks that have continued despite the ceasefire reached on January 18, which ended Israel's three-week assault against the Hamas enclave that killed more than 1,300 Palestinians. Israel and Hamas have been trying to negotiate a lasting ceasefire via Egyptian mediation. *AFP
