Former Saudi mayor jailed over bribes

A Saudi court this week sentenced a former mayor of Jeddah to serve five years in prison and pay a fine of 100,000 Saudi Riyals (Dh98,000) for accepting bribes, wasting public funds, and failing to carry out his duties, the daily Arab News reported.

The charges stem from a royally mandated investigation into the alleged corruption and mismanagement that left the kingdom's second city vulnerable to devastating flooding in 2009. The investigation was the first large-scale probe of current and former officials for corruption.
