Court rejects Nobel laureate's appeal

Myanmar's highest court has rejected an appeal by lawyers of Aung San Suu Kyi to reinstate two key defence witnesses in a trial that has sparked global outrage. The High Court today upheld a lower-court ruling, meaning Ms Suu Kyi will be granted only two defence witnesses in her ongoing trial. She had wanted to have four witnesses in all. The 64-year-old Nobel laureate is charged with violating the terms of her house arrest when an uninvited American man swam secretly to her lakeside home and stayed two days.

Ms Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar's pro-democracy movement, faces up to five years in prison if found guilty. She has been in detention for more than 13 of the last 19 years. * AP
