Earthquake measuring 6.3 hits Indonesia

JAKARTA // A strong 6.3 earthquake hit Indonesia's West Papua province on Tuesday but there was no threat of a tsunami, local meteorologists said.

The quake struck at 17:21 pm (1021 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), 131 kilometres southeast of Kaimana.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the climatology agency said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity, and the archipelago is frequently struck by powerful earthquakes.
