Libya since Qaddafi: a timeline

October 20, 2011 Qaddafi captured and killed while trying to flee Sirte, his hometown and the last major city to fall to Nato-backed rebels who rose up against his regime nine months earlier.

October 23 The former rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) declares Libya's "total liberation" and says more than 30,000 people were killed.

October 31 Nato announces the end of its military role.

November 19 Saif Al Islam, Qaddafi's most prominent son who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, captured by militiamen and detained in the hilltown of Zintan, south-west of Tripoli.

July 7, 2012 Voters choose a national assembly in first election for almost half a century. The liberal coalition beats Islamist parties.

August 8 The NTC transfers power to the General National Congress in a symbolic move marking the country's first peaceful transition.

September 11 Four Americans, including US ambassador, Christopher Stevens, killed in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.

October 14 The GNC elects Ali Zeidan, a human rights lawyer, as prime minister after Mustafa Abu Shagur fails to form a cabinet acceptable to all political factions.
