Corruption by the Mubarak regime: some key points

* Egypt has found assets belonging to former President Hosni Mubarak and his family totaling several hundred millions of dollars, not the tens of billions that many Egyptians believe they amassed through corruption during the former president's nearly 30 years in power

* Only $1.2 billion in assets belonging to government officials and businessmen tied to the old regime have been frozen abroad after legal requests from Egypt. Egyptian investigators believe these assets were stolen or gained through corruption

* Even after finding any assets that investigators believe were illegally acquired, the real challenge is proving they were gained through a crime in a reputable court process. If not, foreign governments might not release the funds

* The new governments in Tunisia and Libya, as well as Egypt, have staked their legitimacy on promises of reform and ending corruption, and they are now under intense pressure to make good on those pledges
