SHARJAH // A young man died yesterday when he fell from a lift he was repairing at a residential building in Sharjah.
The accident happened about 9am when the 28-year-old Indian worker fell from the top of the lift car, the building owner said. The lift then descended and crushed him at the bottom of the shaft.
"It was a big shock for me, especially that I was around," said the building owner, who did not wish to be identified. "I was in panic and didn't know what to start with, calling police and rescuers or attempting to remove the lift on him.
"I tried both with the help of other tenants. When the police arrived they asked us to step aside and let their professional rescuers do the work."
A police spokesman said that the man died at the scene and that his body had been taken to the police forensic laboratory for investigation. He said the 10-storey building, in the Shuwayheen area, was more than 10 years old and that its two lifts had often needed repairs.
