US$10m UAE-funded hospital opens in Sanaa

A US$10 million UAE-sponsored hospital offering medical services to women and children for nominal fees opened in Yemen's capital city, Sanaa, on Sunday.

The Yemeni health minister, Dr Ahmed Al Ansi, said the new hospital marks a "quantum leap" in the level of medical services offered in the country.

The six storey Sheikh Zayed Maternity and Children's Hospital has a capacity of 270 beds and was built on a 7,500sqm plot of land in Al Rawda area, north of Sanaa, on a budget gifted by the Sheikh Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, according to The National's Arabic-language sister paper, Al Ittihad.

The new hospital houses five multi-disciplinary surgery wards in addition to outpatient clinics, emergency rooms, medical labs and 20 incubators for pre-term babies and is staffed by 52 doctors and 85 medics.
