DUBAI // A British teenager was arrested for abandoning her child on a street, an Arabic paper reported today.
It remains unclear when the incident occurred, but local media reports suggest the girl became pregnant out of wedlock while she was in England.
A security guard told Dubai Police the child was left in Bur Dubai. Police took the child to Al Wasl Hospital, where he was determined to be in good health.
An anonymous police source told Emarat al Youm newspaper that the mother was suffering from postnatal depression.
Believing the mother would be likely seek medical help for post-birth effects, police reportedly focused their search for her in hospitals. A doctor in one of the hospitals told investigators he had recently treated a teenager who was suffering from bleeding that seemed to be the result of a birth, but she claimed it was something else.
After interviewing the teenager, she admitted to police that she had become pregnant in England but only discovered her pregnancy when she arrived in the UAE.
She attended prenatal doctors appointments regularly, but did not give birth in a hospital. She decided to leave the child outside a housing complex because she believed it would be difficult to set up records for him without the presence of his father.
The British Embassy has reportedly contacted the father and is gathering information to register the child’s birth. The consulate was not immediately contactable for comment.
The mother and baby have been reunited, according to media reports, and the mother is awaiting “necessary legal procedures”. It is unclear what those procedures might entail. Dubai Police were unwilling to comment.
