Research in Motion will this month release new devices based on the BlackBerry 10 operating system.

UAE gamers hope for better consoles in 2013

The new year promises exciting technology from a string of companies that have much riding on their success.

Troubled smartphone maker Research in Motion will this month release new devices based on the BlackBerry 10 operating system.

The Canadian company is betting the more user-friendly technology running on more powerful devices will entice users away from rivals Apple and Android.

But perhaps the biggest news will happen at the end of this year.

Constant speculation and alleged leaks point to both Sony and Microsoft finally announcing their next generation gaming consoles.

Despite the huge success of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, both machines are now more than seven years old.

Game developers have already been working on new technology, according to reports, and gamers are waiting with baited breath.

Expect the excitement to build through the course of the year with hopefully some big announcements at the E3 electronics expo in the summer.
