UAE aid sent to Somalia


ABU DHABI // The first phase of a UAE relief programme to assist victims of the drought in Somalia was launched yesterday.

According to the state news agency, Wam, volunteers from the Red Crescent Authority and Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity Foundation would erecttent camps inMogadishuto house the thousands of people fleeing drought-stricken areas in the Horn of Africa.

The team will also run a convoy to Bidbadu camp, outside the capital, and hand out rice, edible oil, sorghum and dates.

Every day, hundreds of children die of malnutrition and fatigue in Mogadishu,said Mohamud Ahmed Nor Tarsan, the governor of the capital.
