The lorry load of glass is cleared away, following the accident on the Sheikh Zayed Road near Ghantoot yesterday.

Lorry loses glass load as safety straps snap

Abu Dhabi // Piles of shattered glass were left littering a section of the motorway linking Abu Dhabi to Dubai yesterday after a lorry carrying glazing crashed into a roadside barrier near Ghantoot. Mohammed Hussein, a driver for the Dubai-based company Pearl Coast Glass, said he was travelling towards Abu Dhabi when the safety straps holding the load snapped and the glass shifted.

"All the load came on one side of the vehicle," said Mr Hussein, who was unhurt. He said he had been in the far right lane but when the load shifted it had caused the vehicle to swerve across four lanes of traffic into the railing. The lorry stayed upright, although its drive shaft was broken in the collision and the body was damaged. @Email:mchung@thenational.ae
