'Confused' drivers cause congestion at opening of Sheikh Zayed Tunnel

Congestion caused by confusion over the opening of the 4.2 kilometre Sheikh Zayed Tunnel on Salam Street is expected to clear within days.

"Traffic was running smoothly in the tunnel," said Majed Al Kathiry, head of traffic services at the Abu Dhabi Municipality and head of the operations and maintenance team for the Salam project.

"But at the exit point to Mina Road or the Corniche, they were confused on which exit to take. This is expected during the first week of the opening." He advised motorists to know the exit points in advance to avoid traffic jams.
