SHARJAH // Forty workers were evacuated from six blazing warehouses and a small diesel depot in Hamriya Free Zone 2 on Sunday.

The warehouses contained chemicals and paint.

Sharjah Civil Defence said emergency services were notified of the fire at about 9pm. Crews were on the scene within five minutes.

"We first evacuated workers in the warehouses to a safe place," said a civil defence spokesman. "There were about 40 workers on site at the time but no one was hurt."

Firefighters from Sharjah City, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain helped to bring the blaze under control within 90 minutes. Teams continued the cooling process on Monday and the area remained cordoned off.

The exact cause of the blaze was  still unknown last night. Experts and CID officials were expected to start investigations today.

There were also three smaller fires in Ajman yesterday and on  Sunday. The latter blaze was at workers' accommodation in Ajman's old industrial area. Yesterday's two fires were at a residential house and an office, both near Ajman Port. No one was injured.
