SHARJAH // Prosecutors in Sharjah have asked parents to be more vigilant with their children in order to protect them from being abused by strangers or people they know.
Every month, Sharjah Public Prosecution receives eight to ten cases of children who have been sexually assaulted, said Rashid Al Omran, Sharjah's Public Prosecutor.
Most of the victims were children under the age of fifteen, he said.
"Most of the assaults are committed in elevators, stair cases, school buses and quiet areas near homes," Mr Al Omran said.
He added that false allegations had also been made, usually relating to cases where the family had been in a dispute with the alleged perpetrator.
"In such cases the child would contradict the story as given by the parent," Mr Al Omran said.
He urged parents and school administrators to be vigilant with children and always report any assaults.
