DUBAI // Residents are being urged to steer clear of illegal butchers this Eid.
Dubai Municipality's abattoirs section says the roaming butchers prey on customers who are unaware of local laws.
And the way they operate from door to door often leads to their using unclean tools that may result in health problems, the municipality warns.
Those who observe the sacrificial rite during Eid Al Adha are required to have the prior approval of their animals from authorised slaughterhouses and have the meat inspected to ensure its safety and protect public health.
"The slaughtering time starts after Eid prayers and extends to the last days of Al Tashreeq [between November 7 and 9], so no need to rush to slaughter on the first day of Eid," says Ali Tahir Al Hammadi, the head of abattoir operations.
Abattoirs charge Dh15 to check and slaughter a small sheep or goat, Dh30 for a calf, between Dh40 and Dh45 for a cow, and Dh60 to Dh65 for a camel. The price includes vet inspections.
Municipally approved slaughterhouses are in Al Qusais (04 267 2525), Bur Dubai (04 393 7473), Hatta (04 852 3733) and Al Lisaili (055 404 0916).
In Abu Dhabi, police say they will increase patrols near slaughterhouses and other areas popular with Eid holidaymakers to avoid congestion.
