Ramadan, of course, is the month in which the holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. Quran comes from the Arabic word qara'a, which means to recite. This might not surprise you, since so much of a Muslim's time is spent reciting verses from our holy book. We start our prayers with a chapter called "Al Fatiha" which translates as Revelation and is the first seven verses in the Quran. I'm not quite there yet, but once a Muslim has memorised the entire text, he or she earns the title Hafith or Hafiz.
Muslims believe four main books were revealed to our prophets. 1. Al Suhuf, which was revealed to Prophet Ibrahim (Ibraham). 2. Zaboor, which was revealed to Dawood (David). 3. Anjeel, which was revealed to Prophet Issa (Jesus), peace be upon them all. 4. And the holy Quran, revealed to the last messenger of God, Prophet Mohammed.
