Shipping containers at Khalifa Port in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD).

Project Abu Dhabi: Khalifa Port and Kizad development

Khalifa Port, the region's largest automated port, had its official launch yesterday.

If the port hits its target of 15 million container units a year it will rank alongside Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore as one of the biggest in the world.

The port will act as a gateway for the adjacent Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad) project, on course to become one of the world's largest industrial zones.

The port and Kizad come under the authority of the Abu Dhabi Ports Company.

In line with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, which aims to ease the emirate's reliance on revenue from the oil and gas industry, Khalifa Port and Kizad are expected to contribute 15 per cent of the capital's non-oil GDP within the next two decades.
