Oil tanks saved from Port Khalid factory fire

Firemen saved eight oil tanks from the fire that destroyed the ERCO cooking-oil factory in Port Khalid, a senior Civil Defence official said.

SHARJAH // Firemen saved eight oil tanks from the fire that destroyed the ERCO cooking-oil factory in Port Khalid, a senior Civil Defence official said. The tanks held large quantities of oil that could have burst into flames and made the fire even harder to fight, the official said. Three days after the fire, the site was still cooling yesterday. Smoke from melting iron and burning cooking oil still rose.

"We are grateful to the more than 50 fire units from across the country that helped in fighting the fire. This work wouldn't have been achieved by only one fire department," the official said. The Sharjah Police are investigating the fire. A spokesman for ERCO, Shrikant Rao, said the police has not allowed company officials to return to the factory. "We are just waiting for them when they need us or when they are through to contact us," Mr Rao said.

Brig Humaid Mohammed al Hudaid, director general of Sharjah Police, said on Sunday that the extent of the damages would be determined only after the police report is issued. ykakande@thenational.ae
