Abu Dhabi // A centre to research the attitudes of Muslims around the world is to be set up in the capital.

The Abu Dhabi Gallup Centre (ADGC) is a partnership between the Court of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and the global research organisation Gallup.

It will also aim to provide "innovative analysis and insights on the most important societal challenges" facing the UAE and the GCC, according to a statement released yesterday.

It is intended to build on Gallup's studies of the Muslim world.

The centre will be headed by Dalia Mogahed, the co-author of Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think.

"Our vision is for the Abu Dhabi Gallup Centre to be a major source for cutting-edge research and foresight on the most important challenges facing Muslim societies today," she said. "We are honoured to collaborate with the Crown Prince's Court to build this vital enterprise."

Mrs Mogahed heads the Gallup Centre for Muslim Studies, an independent research centre in Washington DC that provides data-driven analysis of the views of the world's Muslims.

The new centre will serve as a "resource-rich hub for policy makers, thought leaders and global media". It will also offer briefings, workshops and seminars regionally and internationally.

Its base in Abu Dhabi, according to its founders, will help Gallup expand its research and deepen its reach in the region.

Scholars from Gallup will move to Abu Dhabi to help establish the centre, which is due to open this year.
