Nepalese government replaces handwritten passports with electronic ones

The Nepalese government has begun introducing electronic passports to replace existing handwritten documents.

The Nepalese Embassy in Abu Dhabi renews about 30 to 40 passports a month, and the government aims to make all passports machine-readable by 2015 to curtail the alteration of details and ease identification.

The embassy says about 200 of the new passports, which are valid for 10 years, have been issued to Nepalese living in the UAE so far.

Passports issued from April 1, 2010 till December 19, 2010 are valid up to November 24, 2015 only.
