Motorists beware: 'smart patrols' will soon be on Abu Dhabi roads

Police in Abu Dhabi are planning to roll out "smart patrols" to hunt down motorists wanted for traffic violations and catch law breakers in the act.

Using hi-tech day and night cameras, the swift exchange of information and centralised coordination, the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate aims to crack down on speeding drivers and motorists who "threaten the lives of other road users", sources told The National's sister paper, Al Ittihad.

"The smart patrols will be unveiled soon, after all related arrangements are made, in terms of the number of these patrols and their operation mode," the source said, noting that Abu Dhabi Police has already increased the number of speed cameras around the emirate to ensure limits are adhered to.

New mobile digital radars will also be installed at traffic light intersections in the near future.

Abu Dhabi Police has launched a series of road safety awareness campaigns targeting the general public as well as students.
