ABU DHABI // A man was injured as he tried to put out a fire which destroyed a fishing boat docked in the area of Bainunah Street yesterday.
Fire started on the boat, which was in a small port in the area between the UAE Central Bank and Abu Dhabi Executive Council, at about 9am. Y?K, an Indian in his 30s, was nearby when the fire started.
“He tried to stop the fire by throwing water on it, but he injured his hand and leg from the knee down,” said Fahed al Jaberi, a police patrols officer. “The skin on his leg was completely torn. You could can see the flesh underneath.
“Then police and civil defence arrived and they were able to stop the fire in 15 minutes.”
Officer al Jaberi said the man was believed to be cleaner for one of the other boats.
The cause of the fire, which started at the engine, is still unknown. The owner was not on the boat at the time.
Last June, a million-dirham yacht was destroyed after it caught fire at the marina in front of Marina Mall. The fire spread, and it also destroyed the speedboat docked next to it. Firemen arrived 20 minutes later and took two hours to put the fire out.
