Man accused of killing Abu Dhabi doctor attempts suicide

ABU DHABI // The man accused of stabbing Dr Rajan Daniel to death has tried to commit suicide in his jail cell, police said.

M A, 46, was admitted for a psychiatric evaluation after making an attempt on his own life. He is accused of killing the 61-year-old urologist at Ahalia Hospital on Thursday night.

The Pakistani had been visiting Dr Daniel for 25 days. Police did not say what he was being treated for but the accused said in his statement that his health had been damaged by the treatment.

“He was prescribed painkillers and other medication for his illness but these did not help,” said Lt Col Jumaa Al Kaabi, the head of psychological crimes at CID.

“On the day of the crime, they got into an argument about the inefficiency of the treatment and, in particular, a physical exam the doctor performed on him during a previous visit.”

Police said the accused stabbed the doctor repeatedly in the stomach, neck and other areas of his body with a knife he had bought earlier that day.

Hospital staff alerted police when they saw him leaving Dr Daniel’s office covered in blood and holding a knife.

Col Dr Rashed Mohammed Bourshid, director of CID, said he was pleased by the speed with which police had detained the suspect and recovered a weapon, which was found stashed in a stairwell.
