How to learn to scuba dive

DUBAI // Many people in the UAE think about learning to dive - but you need training to know what you are doing and stay safe.

Ali Fikree, an experienced Emirati diver, said people take up the sport for many reasons.

"Some want to get over their fear of the water, and a lot of people do it to learn about the aquatic environment," he added.

Of the dozens of training organisations worldwide, the biggest is the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (Padi).

Signing up with them means your qualifications will be recognised at Padi centres everywhere, and you should find the same procedures wherever you go.

Some consider Padi too corporate, so may be happier with the less formal but no less stringent style of the British Sub-Aqua Club, which has branches in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, or the Emirates Diving Association.

Whichever route you take, you will learn theory and practical skills, then can pursue a host of specialities such as night diving.
