Good deeds on Eid

Celebrating Eid Al Adha in a refugee camp is no way to commemorate the holiday. But this is the reality for tens of thousands of Yemenis who have been driven from their homes due to tribal conflict in the north of the country. Overcrowding in the camps provided by the United Nations has led to disease, poor sanitation and malnutrition, threatening the health of the occupants and driving many to erect makeshift tents outside the camp.

Fortunately, the UAE's Red Crescent has stepped in to build new facilities for those displaced by the conflict. The refugee centre, which opened on Wednesday, will house over 10,000 people and take up the overflow from the Al Mazraq camp in the rural province of Hajjah. While it is a tragedy that any country must endure such hardships, we are particularly mindful of those who must do so during Eid. We commend the Red Crescent's humanitarian effort to ease the burdens of a neighbouring country as this conflict continues.
