DUBAI // A 24-carat rose gold iPad is to be auctioned by the Burj Al Arab to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which starts on Monday.
Bidders will be able to name a price for the unique device on the hotel's Facebook page from October 4, and the iPad will go to the person who offers the most. The winner will be announced on October 23, with all proceeds going to breast cancer initiatives.
The unique iPad has been made by Gold & Co London and has a pink ribbon and the hotel's logo engraved on the back. The auction is part of the Pinking Burj Al Arab campaign, which supports the breast cancer cause annually.
"We have a legacy of supporting breast cancer awareness and lighting the sail in pink for years now," said Heinrich Morio, the Burj Al Arab's general manager. "This showcases our continuous support for a great cause."
Amjad Ali, chief executive of Gold & Co London, said: "This 24-carat rose gold iPad is the most unique product on the market.
"We would urge everyone to participate and nominate generously, as they will not only own an exclusive product, but also contribute to support a worldwide initiative."
The company also produces yellow gold iPads which have gone on sale in Dubai, and has just launched pink and yellow gold versions of the iPhone 5. They will be available from Collector's Palace in Dubai Mall.
Other Pinking Burj Al Arab initiatives include lighting the hotel's sail in pink with a projection of the pink ribbon logo, and special food and beverage products. These will include pink tea and a pink cake, and 50 per cent of the proceeds from sales will got towards breast cancer initiatives.
The campaign will start on Dubai Goes Pink Day, October 4, and continue throughout October. The Burj Al Arab will be one of a number of landmarks around the world that will be lit up in pink - others taking part include the InterContinental and Crowne Plaza hotels at Dubai Festival City.
