For a fee, add a picture on your Dubai licence plate

DUBAI // From next month, car owners in the emirate will be able to choose an illustration of a local landmark to be integrated into their number plates.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has designed a set of images based on popular heritage and tourist structures that can be printed onto the plates for a fee, according to Al Ittihad, The National's Arabic-language sister newspaper.

"This is the first scheme of its kind in the region, which would allow car owners to express their tastes and aspirations through beautiful designs of Dubai landmarks," said Ahmed Behroozian, chief executive of the RTA's Licensing Agency.

A preliminary set of templates will be on offer in January, and other images will be developed at a later stage.
