All 579 applications for the Zayed Future Energy Prize have been reviewed by a reputed third-party research and analysis firm to ensure they meet the prize criteria.
A review committee then chose the 50 best candidates based on four criteria - impact, innovation, leadership and long-term vision.
A selection committee of leading experts in the field of renewable energy and sustainability then evaluated the remaining entries, culling the number to 24 finalists.
The winners are selected by a jury chaired by Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, the president of Iceland.
This year's panel also included Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of the Maldives, Dr Han Seung-soo, the former prime minister of South Korea, Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, the minister of energy for South Africa; Dr Adnan Amin, the director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, the chairman of Masdar, Dr Susan Hockfield, the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Leonardo DiCaprio, the actor and environmental activist.
