Environment director urges UAE to phase out all ozone-depleting substances

Efforts to completely phase out chlorofluorocarbons refrigerants and other ozone-depleting substances have to be intensified, said Hamdan Al Shaer, the director of Dubai Municipality's environment department.

As one of roughly 200 countries that have ratified the Montreal Protocol to protect the ozone layer, the UAE is slowly phasing out ozone-depleting substances in cooperation with local industries and businesses.

Apart from carbon dioxide emissions, all other Kyoto Protocol gases, including fluorinated ones, should also be phased out, he said.
