Families show off their decorated cars at the Spirit of the Union Parade at Yas Island.

Enjoy the party - but keep safe

Millions of revellers across all seven emirates will be celebrating the country's 40th anniversary this weekend, on beaches, in parks, mosques and galleries.

And amid all the excitement, police and security officers in the two biggest emirates will be looking to prevent accidents before they happen, authorities say.

Capt Butti Al Mazrouei, the head of the ambulance section at Abu Dhabi police , said that all the celebrations in the capital, Al Ain and the Western Region would be covered by emergency patrols.

"There will be ambulances, an emergency field bus, motorbikes, golf carts, first response ambulance - which includes a doctor, senior paramedic, a rescuer - and a special field hospital," he said.

The number of patrols on the road has more than doubled, and there will be 50 trained emergency personnel on alert, compared with the usual 15.
