DUBAI // Hundreds of people converged on the Airport Expo for the first day of this year's Gitex Shopper and Consumer Electronics Expo. Stands covered more than three exhibition halls where shoppers eyed some of the 25,000 items for sale, including laptops, cameras and mobile phones. The event, which runs until Friday, had a carnival feel to it as people lined up for the Guitar Hero console game, in which players perform with a plastic guitar.
"It is great fun," said Pradeep Daniels. "I really want to get one of these now," he said after churning out Michael Jackson's Thriller. Nodun Lochana went to Gitex in the hope of finding a bargain. "I had my eye on a sound system in Bur Dubai and they were willing to negotiate the price a little bit. I came here expecting the same but I was offered a steering wheel for my computer instead for free if I bought the same sound system.
"There are lots of good offers here and my friends told me about this before so I waited. And it has worked out." Steven Freeny, an engineer based in Dubai, said he was stunned by the variety of things to buy. Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, opened Gitex Shopper 2008. It is in the Central, West and East Halls in Dubai Airport Expo from 11am to 10pm and from 3pm to 10pm on Saturday. Tickets are Dh20.
