UAE private school costs on a par with global elite

Private schools charge more than many elite schools around the world.

Dubai // Average tuition fees for schools following American, International Baccalaureate (IB) and English curriculums are Dh45,000 a year, with some charging more than Dh60,000.

The most expensive school in Dubai, Gems World Academy, which follows an IB curriculum, charges more than Dh96,000 in tuition fees for grades 11 and 12.

These fees are comparable to some of the most reputable schools in the world. Rugby School, a boarding school in Rugby, Warwickshire, is among the oldest independent schools in Britain. It charges 6,535 (Dh37,495) a term for day pupils and boarders pay about 10,415.

Mayo College in Ajmer, Rajasthan, has a long history as an elite Indian school. It charges about 320,000 Indian rupees (Dh17,747) a term. Non-Indian pupils, however, pay about Dh34,370.

The Mayoor Private School of Abu Dhabi, the first branch of Mayo College in the UAE, is scheduled to open next April, with a fee range of Dh12,000 to Dh20,000.

The fee structure is awaiting approval from the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

Public schools in the UAE are generally for Emiratis. Those pupils do not pay any fees. Expatriate children who are eligible for state school pay Dh6,000.
