School snatches quiz win at final buzzer

Dubai Modern High School takes competition in final question showdown.

DUBAI //A schools quiz competition in which more than 450 students from around the UAE took part last night came down to the final question: "What is a huge initiative from Xerox that will help the world?"

Dubai Modern High School (DMHS) hit the buzzer. "It's an environmental initiative," said 16-year-old Kirti Kuchimanchi after consulting with her teammate, Shruthi Shreedharan.

"That's correct," the quizmaster answered. "Xerox is developing paper that erases itself."

The answer meant that DMHS beat Indian High School Dubai (IHSD) and Our Own English School - Fujeirah (OOES) to top spot in the Tata Consultancy Services IT Wiz 2011 quiz competition last night.

"We didn't expect to be here," Shruthi said. "We're glad we made it. We're the only girls to make it to the final round and we showed it to them [the boys]."

Tied for second place were the teams from IHSD and OOES. That was decided with the question: "When Charles Babbage invented the difference engine, who wrote the program?"

The IHSD team of Hanumanth Kumar and Meher Karthik, both 15, hit the buzzer. "Lady Ada Lovelace,"they responded correctly.

"We didn't expect to come this far," Hanumanth said. "It would have been good to win, but it was a good fight."

The competition was held at the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium of the Indian High School, Dubai.
