Dubai man jailed three years for trying to ship Dh1.2m of fake bills

DUBAI // A man who attempted to ship more than 18 million counterfeit Indian Rupees (Dh 1.2 million) to Bangladesh has been sentenced to three years in prison, according to a Dubai Criminal Court.

MJ, a 49-year-old Bangladeshi, was also fined Dh10,000. He will be deported upon completion of his prison term.

Prosecutors said that police received a tip-off that MJ, a heavy machinery operator, was trying to ship the counterfeit money through Al Rahhala Shipping Services in Naif.

They seized nine boxes from the company's offices on July 2, and found fake money in three of them. The remaining boxes contained cigarettes, textiles and abayas.

Emirati policeman, AO, said the man confessed he was given the counterfeit money by a Pakistani who promised to pay him if he sent it to Bangladesh. But MJ denied the charge when he appeared in court earlier this month.
