Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has given 35,000 palm seedlings to farmers taking part in the Liwa Date Festival, in recognition of their efforts to preserve national heritage, WAM, the state news agency, reported yesterday. The gesture was made as Sheikh Mohammed visited the festival, which is being held under the auspices of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs. The seedlings will be distributed to the winners and participants at the festival.
The first winners were announced yesterday and Daham al Mazrouei took top prize - a Nissan Armada - in the dabbas date category. The farmers who came second and third also won vehicles, and another 12 entrants received cash of up to Dh40,000. The festival runs until July 26. * The National
